Illinois Governor Pat Quinn set a standard all states should emulate when he signed a bill requiring Illinois high school students to have mandatory CPR and defibrillator training.

The CPR bill was introduced to lawmakers by several families who had high school aged children that experienced cardiac emergencies while on campus.

The law allows students to opt out, but we believe everyone should know how to administer some form of CPR and how to operate a defibrillator.

As Governor Quinn put it, “ This common-sense law will make sure they are better prepared to help their classmates, teachers, family and friends in case of an emergency.”

A fifth grader in Michigan performed the Heimlich maneuver on a friend, saving the boy’s life and earning an HVA Life Saving Award from a local EMS company.

The Heimlich is part of a First Aid, Life-Saving course, which should include CPR.

It’s never to soon to know how to recognize an emergency or threat, and how to act on it, as the Ann Arbor fifth grader can attest.

Choking is the third main cause of deaths at home.

Watch for these signs in infants; Weak cough or cry, Difficulty breathing, unable to make sounds, soft, or high-pitched sounds when inhaling, bluish skin color.

Most adults will grab their throats, but other signs include wheezing, unable to talk, blue skin or lips, passing out, and gagging.

Sometimes CPR must be performed in one’s underwear, but for one Spanish police woman, hot models in lingerie is just plain sexist.

Fortnight Lingerie, a Canadian underwear firm created a racy, tongue-in-cheek “Super-Sexy CPR” training video that, so far, hasn’t met with any complaints, until recently.

The medical training staff chose the video because of it’s humor. A spokesman for Aragon Police states that the video will not be used again for training.
